Liposuction and Liposculpsure in Buffalo, NY

Liposuction and Liposculpture

In Buffalo Liposuction has been performed by Dr. Samuel Shatkin Jr. since 1989. Dr. Shatkin has refined the technique to be considered Liposculpture.  Liposuction or Liposculpture is an operation where localized areas of fat can be removed from areas that a patient desires improved contour. It is not uncommon for patients who are overweight to inquire with Dr. Shatkin during the consultation of the possibility of liposuction. In most cases Dr. Shatkin and his staff will work with the individual to help them lose weight if necessary to allow them to be an ideal candidate for liposuction.  Liposuction is frequently used to contour the tummy, the love handles for men, or saddlebags for women. It can also be used for other areas of the body including the face, neck, arms and legs.

Reasons for considering liposuction

  1. Eliminate areas of fat in selected areas.
  2. Improve balance and proportions of the body.
  3. Remove areas of stubborn fat that cannot be managed with diet and exercise

Types of Liposuction

There are several types of liposuction that can be performed. I typically uses the tumescent technique for most patients. The tumescent technique involves infiltration of fluid in the areas to be treated. This allows the fat to be liquefied thus facilitating removal. Some patients require the use of additional energies to remove fat such as ultrasonic liposuction. During the consultation, I will help you choose the liposuction procedure that is best suited for you.  Some liposuction surgeons use other instruments like Vaser and Smart-Lipo which add heat energy to the skin and fat. This can cause scarring and fibrosis; firmness and stiffness of the skin. When this occurs, the skin will not feel supple.  By using small cannula and keeping the fat removal in the deeper layer, the contours can be improved while limiting the risks of stiffness and irregularities.  A cannula is a thin tube that is inserted through the tiny incisions to suction the fat. 360-Lipo is a technique used to perform circumferential body contouring of the torso.  It is often performed along with a tummy tuck to tighten the core muscles as well as the skin when laxity contributes to the torso fullness. General procedure

In most cases liposuction is performed under local anesthesia with intravenous sedation. I typically perform this in my  office based surgery center at the Aesthetic Associates Centre.  The operation is performed by making several small incisions located in the area that fat removal is desired. The operation is performed with passing a cannula, which essentially is like a stainless steel straw with small openings at the tip, through the skin and through the fat pad removing the fat with light suction.  I use small cannulas and essentially sculpts the area for treatment during the procedure.   The fat can be transferred to other areas of the body where added volume is desired including breast and buttock areas.

Recovery process

My patients will be  required to rest at home following the procedure and elevate the areas that are treated as best as possible.  Compression garments will be used to allow for reduced swelling and bruising after the surgery and typically will be required to be worn for at least two weeks all the time and for most of the time for an additional two weeks.  The patient will return to the office and see me or my staff the day after the surgery and then will be allowed to shower at home.  Although complications are rare these risks will be diminished with the patient following the instructions.
